Itâs time to tune in to the Great Moose Migration livestream
Swedish public television producers have spent the past few days rushing to ready cameras for one of the most anticipated shows of the season. But the last-minute chaos wasnât the result of poor planning or inexperienced crewmembersâitâs all the mooseâs fault.
âThere is a lot of moose traffic. They are waiting for us,â producer Stefan Edlund told Swedenâs public broadcaster SVT. âWe had to make a big adjustment based on our basic plan.â
Edlund works on Den stora älgvandringen, which roughly translates to The Great Moose Migration or The Great Elk Trek. Since its debut in 2019, the three-week, 24/7 livestream of northern Swedenâs Ă ngerman River has documented hundreds of the worldâs largest deer species as they make their way across thawing waters to spring grazing pastures. Nicknamed the âKing of the Forest,â bull moose can grow to nearly 7 feet tall at the shoulder and weigh nearly 1,000 pounds. Females are slightly smaller, but still formidable.
Although numbers have declined since the 1980s, Sweden still has more moose per square kilometer than anywhere else in the world. Exact numbers arenât known, but around 300,000â400,000 moose are believed to roam the country at any given time, depending on the season. Right now, itâs migration seasonâand thanks to warmer weather, it started about a week earlier than anticipated.
Originally planned to begin broadcasting on April 22, Den stora älgvandringen went live on the national broadcasterâs streaming platform SVT Play on April 15. For the next 20 days, 26 strategically placed remote cameras connected by nearly 12 miles of cable will provide uninterrupted moose content to what has been a steadily growing audience. Nearly 1 million viewers tuned in during its inaugural 2019 season. Last year, that number grew to around 9 million.
But donât expect massive moose herds storming across the river about 187 miles northwest of Stockholm. The migration is a much slower paced event, often featuring nothing but pristine Nordic wilderness for hours on end, peppered by an occasional small group of moose on the move. But the meditative views and calming ambient forestscapes are still worth a watch, according to the legions of fans.
âI feel relaxed, but at the same time Iâm like, âOh, thereâs a moose. Oh, what if thereâs a moose? I canât go to the toilet!ââ one longtime fan told the Associated Press.

Huge gold nugget found by metal detector enthusiasts set for auction
A triceratopâs nasal horn, fossilized horse skull, and a 10-pound golden nugget uncovered by a couple using a metal detector over 40 years ago are only some of the rarities set for auction on April 23 at the Heritage Auctionâs 2025 Nature & Science SignatureÂŽ Auction.
The shiny behemoth known as the âGolden Beautyâ was found in 1979 the Kalgoorlie Goldfields in Western Australia by John and Frances Aggiss. The couple was out simply looking for a little gold with their metal detector, but ended up finding the largest from Kalgoorlie in more than half a century. At the time of writing, the bid for the Golden Beauty is at $400,000.Â
âGold always has been enormously popular, in part because of its pure value and beauty, but also because it is exceedingly rare,â Craig Kissick, Vice President of Nature and Science at Heritage Auctions, said in a statement. âIt has been estimated that all of the Gold ever mined could fit in a cube measuring roughly 22 meters (72 feet) in each direction. Very little remains in a natural nugget state, with the vast majority melted down and refined for things like coins and jewelry.â
Golden Beauty was once part of a private Swiss collection and is noted for its size. Itâs close to 7.5 inches and weighs more than 145 troy ounces, or 10 pounds. By comparison, a nugget that weighs only one troy ounce is about as rare as a five-carat diamond.Â
âFinding a Gold nugget of any size is an absolute trophy, but to find something like this is beyond rare,â said Kissick. âA lot of people have spent their lives searching for Gold and never found anything even close to this.â
Another golden nugget found in Australia that weighs 15.52 troy ounces, or about one pound, is also up for grabs. An anonymous donor placed the nugget into a Salvation Army kettle during the Salvation Armyâs Red Kettle Campaign in December 2024. The proceeds from this piece are slated to benefit the Salvation Armyâs Annual National Commanderâs Red Kettle Challenge 2025.

Auction enthusiasts with deep pockets can also bid on a 13-inch ammonite fossil with predation marks from the Bearpaw Formation in Alberta, Canada. This colorful and iridescent ammonite is the only material classified as both a fossil and a gemstone. The circular dots found near the center of the fossil indicate that a predatory marine reptile called a mosasaur took some bites of it.Â
Other items of note include a sword called Ekleipsis that was made by artist Tristain Dare using meteorites, several other meteorites, and a backgammon set made from various minerals.Â
